I’m going to keep this to the point.

Recently I’ve had a good number of clients get in touch with me, as their parents’ mental faculties deteriorate.

Where I can, I will help.

This often means ruling off a whole afternoon to really exercise patience and compassion, when people unfamiliar with dealing with lawyers, need to feel comfortable. I need to feel comfortable that the client feels comfortable.

My message to you today, is whether it’s for yourselves or your parents, please take action as soon as you feel able.

It’s not a great situation for any of us, to meet with clients who struggle to follow everything they need to. If we’re in doubt about what lawyers call “mental capacity” then we need to seek guidance from doctors or capacity assessors, and we’re geared up to deal with those enquiries, quickly and efficiently. Far better though, is to put documents like this in place at a time in life when you wonder if you’ll ever need them.

And that’s the whole point.

As soon as you need them, Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are outside your reach. You can only put them in place while you don’t need them.

If you feel you’d benefit from chatting through the concept, before booking an appointment with your local professional adviser, please pick up the phone to Jane on 01727 840 240.

If you suffer a massive stroke or are involved in a car accident, you may lose the opportunity to put them in place, to make things far easier for your family to deal with your affairs. It doesn’t have to be dementia in your 80s, to make LPAs an absolute God-send.

Get in touch if you’d like to. We’re here to support you.
