Maybe I’m too old to be told off, but my little sister had some firm words for me today, after I re-enacted my paragliding experience in Oludeniz, a most beautiful and inspiring area of Turkey.
I told my sister that I am so obsessed by my job, that the subject of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) actually passed through my mind while gliding above the sea.
She then asked whether my Will was in place. I happily replied yes, it’s in place. Then she asked the killer question. Is my Will that I really want, in place. She is aware, you see, of a small but significant detail, which I’ve been meaning to have incorporated into my Will, for the last year or so. And since resolving to deal with this small but significant detail, I have taken a good number of holidays, getting on and off various planes.
How, she said, can you post online prompts and nudges to others, about taking action, when you haven’t yourself? And I know she’s right.
The issue, is that I deliver a top service to my clients, and pride myself on providing the two week Will, if that’s what clients want. For my own affairs however, like most other professionals, I fit my own priorities around my other commitments. Clients come first.
I get the feeling that I will not live it down if I don’t get on and ensure my real Will, the one that’s signed and witnessed correctly, is not soon in line with my ideal Will, the one I really want to take effect in real life.
It’s not difficult. It just requires me to take the action that I relentlessly encourage my clients to take. As I often say, in an effort to nudge others, when will now be a good time to deal with it?
